Roof Decking: Different Types & Proper Installation Steps

When it comes to the health of your roof, what lies beneath your shingles is just as important as the materials you see. Your roof decking forms the foundation of your entire roofing system, playing a major role in structural support, moisture protection, and long-term durability.

Why Roof Decking Is the Backbone of Your Roof

  • Structural Support: Decking ties your rafters or trusses together and provides a flat, stable surface.
  • Water Damage Prevention: Acts as a second barrier against moisture and wind-driven rain.
  • Attachment Point: Shingles, nails, and underlayment must adhere to a strong, level surface.
  • Fire and Wind Ratings: Quality of decking impacts how your roof holds up to high winds and fire.
  • Energy Efficiency: Properly installed decking reduces heat transfer into your attic.

6 Key Installation Steps

1. Remove Existing Shingles and Underlayment

All shingles, nails, felt paper, and flashing are removed. Any rotted or warped sections are identified.

2. Inspect the Existing Deck

Check for moisture stains, spongy feel, black mold, mildew, or animal damage.

3. Replace or Add New Decking Panels

Most homes use 7/16" OSB or plywood sheets. Boards are staggered with 1/8" gaps for expansion.

4. Secure with Proper Fasteners

Fasteners every 6" on edges and 12" in the field. Code-compliant ring shank nails or screws.

5. Install Drip Edge and Underlayment

Drip edge metal at eaves and rakes. Synthetic underlayment or ice-and-water shield over the deck.

6. Final Check Before Shingles

Walk the deck to check for soft spots. Verify all seams and transitions are sealed.

Common Decking Materials

  • OSB (Oriented Strand Board): Cost-effective, widely used, resists splitting
  • Plywood: Stronger, moisture-resistant, often used in higher-end installations
  • Tongue-and-Groove Boards: Found in older homes, often replaced during re-roofing
  • Plank Decking: May require overlay with modern sheathing

Signs Your Decking Needs Replacement

  • Sagging or uneven rooflines
  • Ceiling leaks or stains inside your home
  • Mold, mildew, or musty odors in the attic
  • Shingle buckling or soft walking areas
  • Nails popping up through shingles
