What Is GAF?
GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. 1 in 4 homes in the U.S. are protected by a GAF roof. Timberline HDZ® shingles are the #1-selling shingles in North America.
But GAF doesn't just make shingles. They also run a contractor certification program with three tiers:
- GAF Certified™ — GAF Certified™ contractors can offer one of GAF's enhanced warranties, the System Plus Limited Warranty.
- GAF Certified Plus™ — GAF entrusts Certified Plus™ contractors to offer our System Plus® Limited Warranty and our Silver Pledge™ Limited Warranty on qualifying roof systems.

GAF awards its Master Elite® Contractor designation to fewer than 2% of all roofing contractors. It's not something you apply for and automatically get. You have to earn it — and keep earning it every year.
What Does It Take to Become GAF Master Elite?
GAF doesn't just hand out Master Elite certification. Contractors must meet all of the following requirements:
Proper Licensing and Insurance
The contractor must hold a valid state contractor license and carry adequate liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. In North Carolina, that means a General Contractor license. The game-changer is workmanship coverage. Most roofing warranties only cover the shingles themselves — if the shingles are defective, the manufacturer will replace them. But most roof problems aren't caused by defective shingles. They're caused by bad installation.
A standard warranty doesn't cover that. If your roofer installed the flashing wrong, or didn't nail the shingles properly, and you get a leak in year 5 — you're on your own. The manufacturer says "not our problem" and the roofer who installed it is either out of business or won't return your calls.

GAF's wind limited warranty term is 15 years. Maximum wind speed coverage is 130 mph with Special Installation. LayerLock-labeled shingles on Golden Pledge have the WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty, with no maximum wind speed limitation.

What Happens When You DON'T Use a Certified Contractor?
Let's be blunt. When you hire an uncertified roofer, here's what you're risking:
Weak warranty. A non-certified installation of Timberline shingles with at least 3 qualifying GAF accessory products is the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty. Workmanship is not covered. The Smart Choice Protection Period is 10 years.
No accountability. If the roofer disappears (and plenty do), who do you call? On Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge, if GAF determines there is an application error within the coverage, GAF will arrange to have your roof repaired or, at its sole option, provide you with replacement GAF Products and reimburse you for the full reasonable cost of labor and other materials.
Voided coverage. If shingles aren't installed according to GAF specifications, even the basic warranty can be voided. Uncertified contractors are more likely to cut corners that void your coverage.
Insurance issues. Some insurance companies ask about contractor certifications when processing claims. A certified installation can smooth the claims process.
We see this every year in the Triangle. A homeowner hires the cheapest bid — some guy with a truck and a ladder — and two years later they've got leaks, blown-off shingles, and zero warranty coverage. Then they call us to fix it, and they end up paying twice.

If a contractor claims to be Master Elite but doesn't show up in GAF's directory — that's a red flag.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GAF Master Elite certification cost the homeowner more?
No. The certification doesn't add to your roof replacement cost. What it does is give you access to the Golden Pledge Warranty — which is a massive upgrade in protection at no additional cost to you. You're paying the same price for a significantly better warranty.
Can any roofer install GAF shingles?
Yes, anyone can buy and install GAF shingles. But without certification, they cannot offer the Golden Pledge Warranty. You'll only get the basic limited warranty, which doesn't cover workmanship.
How long does the Golden Pledge Warranty last?

Is the Golden Pledge Warranty transferable?
To transfer a GAF Warranty, email ccp@gaf.com with your name, address, and the date you purchased the property. GAF will need a copy of your deed or other proof of the date the property changed hands.
