The Short Answer
Most residential roof replacements in Raleigh take 1 to 3 days of actual on-site work. A standard single-story home with architectural shingles can often be completed in a single day. Larger homes, complex roof lines, or specialty materials may take 2–3 days.
But the full timeline — from your first call to final cleanup — involves more than just the installation day. Here's what to expect from start to finish.
The Full Roof Replacement Timeline
Week 1–2: Inspection and Estimate
Everything starts with a professional roof inspection. At K&D Roofing, we offer free inspections where we assess your roof's condition, take measurements, and document any damage with photos.
After the inspection, you'll receive a detailed estimate. If you're filing an insurance claim, we'll work with your adjuster to make sure the scope of work is accurate — something we've done hundreds of times since founding K&D Roofing in 2017.
Week 2–3: Material Selection and Ordering
Once you approve the estimate, it's time to choose your materials. This includes:
- Shingle style and color — We carry the full GAF Timberline line and can help you choose the right color for your home
- Underlayment and ventilation components
- Flashing, drip edge, and accessories
- Gutter replacement or repairs if needed
Most materials are available within 3–7 business days in the Raleigh area. Specialty products like designer shingles or metal roofing panels may take 2–3 weeks to arrive.
Week 3–4: Scheduling the Installation
Scheduling depends on weather and our production calendar. During peak storm season (spring and late summer), the wait can be longer due to high demand. We always aim to get you on the schedule within 1–2 weeks of material delivery.
Installation Day(s): The Main Event
This is what most people think of when they ask "how long does it take?" Here's how a typical installation day breaks down:
6:30–7:00 AM: Crew arrives, sets up safety equipment and material staging
7:00–9:00 AM: Tear-off of old roofing materials. This is the loudest part of the day. Our crews use tarps and magnetic nail sweepers to protect your landscaping and driveway.
9:00 AM–12:00 PM: Installation of underlayment, ice and water shield (in valleys and at eaves), and drip edge flashing
12:00–4:00 PM: Shingle installation, ridge cap, pipe boots, and all detail work
4:00–5:30 PM: Final inspection, cleanup, and debris removal. We haul everything away — you won't find a single nail in your yard.
For a typical 2,000–2,500 square foot Raleigh home, this entire process fits into one day with a full crew.
Factors That Affect Your Timeline
Roof Size and Complexity
A simple gable roof on a ranch-style home is straightforward. A 4,000 square foot home with multiple dormers, valleys, skylights, and steep pitches takes considerably more time. Here's a general guide:
- 1,500–2,000 sq ft, simple roof: 1 day
- 2,000–3,000 sq ft, moderate complexity: 1–2 days
- 3,000–4,500 sq ft, complex roof: 2–3 days
- 4,500+ sq ft or commercial: 3–5 days
For commercial roofing projects, timelines vary widely based on the system and building size. Contact us for a custom estimate.
Roofing Material
- Architectural shingles (GAF Timberline): Fastest to install. Most one-day completions use this material.
- Designer/premium shingles: Slightly slower due to more precise installation requirements.
- Standing seam metal: 2–4 days due to panel fabrication, precise measurements, and specialized installation techniques.
- Stone-coated steel: 2–3 days.
Weather
Raleigh's weather is generally roofing-friendly, but there are factors to consider:
- Rain: We won't install shingles in the rain. If there's a surprise shower, we'll tarp the roof and resume when it's dry. Your home is never left exposed overnight without protection.
- Extreme heat: Summer temperatures in the Triangle regularly hit 95°F+. We start early and manage crew hydration and breaks. Heat doesn't stop us, but it can slow the pace slightly.
- Cold weather: Asphalt shingles need to be installed above 40°F for proper sealing. Winter installations are possible but require hand-sealing and may take longer.
- Wind: Sustained winds above 25 mph can make roofing unsafe. We monitor conditions and reschedule if necessary.
Deck Condition
When the old shingles come off, we inspect every inch of the roof deck (the plywood underneath). Rotted or damaged decking must be replaced before new roofing goes on. Minor repairs (a few sheets of plywood) add 1–2 hours. Extensive deck replacement can add half a day or more.
This is one of those things that's impossible to know until tear-off day. Reputable contractors — including K&D Roofing — will call you immediately if we find deck damage and get your approval before proceeding.
Layers of Old Roofing
North Carolina building code allows a maximum of two layers of asphalt shingles. If your home has two layers that both need to come off, tear-off takes significantly longer than a single layer. We always recommend a complete tear-off to one layer for the best results and longest-lasting installation.
Permits and Inspections
Raleigh and Wake County require building permits for roof replacements. As a licensed General Contractor in NC, K&D Roofing handles all permitting. The permit process typically adds 1–3 business days before work can begin, and a final inspection is required after completion.
What Happens After Installation?
Same-Day Cleanup
Our crews perform a thorough cleanup on the final day of installation. This includes:
- Removing all old materials and debris
- Running magnetic nail sweepers across your yard and driveway (multiple passes)
- Inspecting landscaping for any damage
- Loading everything into our dump trailer — nothing goes in your trash
Final Inspection
A K&D Roofing project manager does a quality check on every job before we consider it complete. We also take completion photos for your records and for warranty registration.
Warranty Registration
As a GAF Master Elite contractor — a designation held by only the top 2% of roofers nationwide — K&D Roofing can offer enhanced GAF warranties that most contractors can't. We'll register your warranty with GAF, which can include coverage for up to 50 years on materials and 25 years on workmanship.
Learn more about your options in our guide to GAF Golden Pledge vs Silver Pledge warranties.
Municipal Inspection
After we're done, the local building inspector will come out to verify the work meets code. We coordinate this and are present for the inspection. Our pass rate is excellent because we install to manufacturer specifications every time.
Tips to Keep Your Replacement on Schedule
- Make decisions early. Delays in color and material selection push back your install date.
- Clear the area around your home. Move cars, patio furniture, and anything fragile away from the house. We need room for our dump trailer and material staging.
- Communicate with neighbors. A heads-up about a day of noise goes a long way.
- Be available by phone. If we find unexpected damage during tear-off, we need to reach you for approval.
- Plan for pets. The noise and vibration can stress animals. Consider boarding dogs or keeping them at a friend's house for the day.
