Every year several annual events take place in Durham. Each happens at a different date but normally in the same month, giving residents and tourists something to look forward to no matter the time of the year. Many of these events have been made virtual in 2021 and 2022, but there are hopes of them coming back soon!
There’s a rich history and culture in Durham, and the annual Kwanzaa celebration helps to highlight that every year. This year the event is digital, but keep an eye out for next year and be sure to join in on the digital event or rewatch it.

Film festivals are common in a community full of artists. The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is a four-day international festival that features 100 or more documentary films and the directors, producers, and subjects that create them.
Celebrate culture, art, and food at the Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival in Durham. African American culture has shaped Durham and made it what it is today. Celebrating the culture and enjoying all it has to offer is one of the best parts of the Bimbé Festival.

The annual Juneteenth celebration happens in June every year, with multiple events. Be on the lookout for some of these.
A true musical festival in the heart of summer is hard to come by. There aren’t many cities that still put on festivals, and the Festival for the Eno makes you wish they took place year-round. There are multiple stages, art exhibits, hands-on crafts, food, beer, and water activities at this festival. It’s fun for the whole family!
The Bull City Rumble is a vintage motorcycle and scooter rally hosted by Ton Up NC over Labor Day weekend every year. Whether you’re a lover of vintage bikes or you want to get in on the fun and see some of these beautiful bikes, check out the Rumble.
Another music festival, the Art of Cool Festival brings in some really great artists every year.
September also brings an art festival, Black Wall Street: Homecoming, and Pride: Durham. Each of these highlights a different element of the culture and humanity that should be celebrated throughout the region.
World Beer Festival is one you’d never want to miss. Especially if you’re a lover of beer, they offer more than 250 world-class beers from breweries worldwide that are sure to please. There are also great eats, live music, and other fun throughout this festival.
Holiday markets are magical, and the Durham Art Walk Holiday Market is no exception. Here you’ll find food, drinks, and one-of-a-kind art pieces from local artists. Whether you’re looking for a new decor piece or the perfect gift, this is a great place to shop.
December is the last month on our list, but it’s still chock-full of fun things happening. One of the most notable is the Durham Christmas by Candlelight at Duke Homestead. It’s a beautiful way to recognize Durham’s history and celebrate Christmas with your family and friends.
Durham is just a few minutes away from Raleigh and Chapel Hill, two of North Carolina’s biggest cities and home to college division I and professional sports teams. When you’re looking for a fun time, watching a game or catching up with a friend or family member is an exciting way, sports events are great for both!
North Carolina’s professional hockey club is the Carolina Hurricanes. They’re a cutthroat team that works hard and puts on a great show every time they play. Catching a home game isn’t even too expensive, making it a great way to spend the night out. Their record hasn’t been the best in recent years, but everyone loves a comeback story so start cheering for the Hurricanes!
Duke is a legendary school both in sports and academics. They’ve been producing amazing athletes and world-changing individuals since the conception of the University in 1883. Today, their basketball team is highlighted as one of the best in Division I, and they’re off to a great start yet again this year. Click here for a composite schedule of their athletic department.
Another well-established University is North Carolina State. With a range of teams at different skill levels, you’ll find their men’s and women’s sports to be more than entertaining. It’s no secret that North Carolina colleges are packed with athletic talent, and watching the sporting competitions is always fun.
Last on our high-ranking division I sports list in North Carolina is the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. This school has won seven national championships and participated in twenty final fours. Picking up a good set of tickets to one of their games isn’t as easy as some of the other teams out there, but they’re worth it. And, when you’re rooting for the Tar Heels, you’ve got a great record to back it up.
